Our Wedding Weekend

If someone had told me last August that I would be Nine months into marriage and expecting a precious little one on the way in a years time, I wouldn't have believed them!
Here I am now, writing from our home in Georgia with nine months of marriage under my belt and, Lord willing, a lifetime ahead of learning through adventures with the man I love so dearly.

I've contemplated how I should re-enter the blog world after months of silence and a complete change of life. Of course, there's always the "original" idea of doing a catch-up post (which I may not be able to resist at a later time :)), but this time I wanted to share with my readers how the Lord directed every step of our wedding so specifically, and what a blessed and beautiful weekend it was!

So here it is, my dear readers...Our Wedding Weekend

The planning began one day in late October while Andrew and I were working to clean up his three acres of tomatoes. There was confusion about the type of wedding we wanted and where to begin in the planning. Needless to say, the details were a little overwhelming. We had ideas of what we wanted; but didn't know how to go about creating the atmosphere (sacred, sentimental, festive) we so desired. In the midst of sharing ideas and not gaining any ground of peace, we paused- Standing on ground covered in retired tomato plants and stakes, the peaceful cool breeze bringing a change of season-we paused to approach the throne of God and request that He direct us in the planning. That He would plan a day which would glorify Him and represent Christ and His bride.
We resumed our work and Andrew went to the creek to work on the pump. A short while later he came running to meet me in the field exclaiming, "I've had a moment of brilliance!". It certainly was a moment of brilliance, and we're so thankful that the Lord answered our prayers and gave us a vision for the day we made a covenant before Almighty God.

Even though we broke all the rules of tradition and, I'm sure, sent a shock wave through our social circles; it's amazing the excitement that we both experienced once we stepped back from the traditional wedding routine and asked what the day is truly about. We wanted the close fellowship and witness of those we've shared most of life with; the ceremony to be simple and sacred, sharing the vows we'd written to one another in the outdoor cathedral of God's creation; and for there to be freedom to think without the stress of meeting tradition's standard. :)

After working in the field, on the drive back to Andrew's house, we predicted responses from both our families, not knowing what they would think about our very different ideas. Around the lunch table we began to describe our new thoughts: cabin wedding, worshiping together the night before the ceremony, an early morning breakfast together before the covenant is made (consisting of a coffee bar!), a sacred quiet ceremony with just our families to witness, and a conclusion of a feast and dancing together!
The response was almost more affirming than our excitement as a couple...they loved it!
So it was that the planning began and the weekend we had counted down to arrived...

November 20, 2010
Early Saturday morning grandparents arrived and the Johnson caravan headed for our destination point, Hawkesdene House in Andrews, North Carolina.The view became more and more breathtaking as we drove deeper into the captivating mountains. It was the strangest and most sobering sensation- knowing that I would not leave these mountains the same. I was driving into the mountains under my father's care and guidance- and I would leave with that title having been given to another man. Praise God for the peace that is experienced in such a sobering time- a peace which passeth all understanding from His hand of guidance.

Upon arriving, there were delighted oohs and ahhs while excited faces went from one grand room to another and walked around the beautiful grounds. One of the most pleasurable sights for my eyes was the full-fledged coffee bar! Our God is so lovingly detailed in giving us the desires of our heart.

While waiting for the Darby clan to arrive, we trekked up the mountain trail to check out the view from the gazebo. It was worth the hike! A beautiful display of God's handiwork.
On the way back down the trail, sweaty glistening and out of breath, we were greeted by Andrew Daniel- running up the mountain with ferocious energy. It was a wondrous and exciting moment, and both of us were at a loss for words- knowing why we were all gathering that weekend!

The afternoon was spent in beautiful fellowship: there were games being played inside, conversations being enjoyed around the outdoor fireplace, and the little ones thoroughly enjoying the llamas!

As the sun began to set, everyone gathered around the pavilion to enjoy some delicious kabobs. It was romantically blissful: crisp November air, a blazing fireplace, candle lit tables, joyous laughter and music amongst so many smiling faces and two very happy hearts.

The evening was concluded with worship and singing around the campfire. Clay and Avie played their guitars as we all sang and made music in our hearts.

Families then retired to their cottages and the heavens rejoiced as the stillness preludes the morning to come.

November 21, 2010
It was misty and peaceful as the sun determined an appearance early Sunday morning.
Andrew and I woke early to make the trek up the mountain a second time, this time with Bibles and Andrew's journal in hand. It was a special time of reflecting and praying together.We returned to a feast of a breakfast and hot coffee. It was a full house, with the laughter of precious little ones filling the once stagnant rooms.

At 11:20, everyone gathered outside for the long awaited moment to covenant two lives before Heaven.

Just after the ceremony, Andrew and I had some quiet time together before the festivities and feasting began.

Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

Our Life Changing Weekend...

On Saturday, October 23rd, Andrew and I headed out to meet his siblings for the hike that they do each year for Andrew's birthday. We arrived earlier than the others, so he and I headed down to take pictures by the waterfall.

After Andrew took this picture of me, and while I walked back through the water to meet him, he was preparing to give me the most beautiful and precious gift I have and ever will receive...

The gifts started with this memory box which he had made.

A letter which will always be dear to my heart.

The contents of the box opened up a future of love and life.

The most precious gift of all- the blessed honor of being chosen to be the wife of Andrew Darbyshire!

Today is an exceptionally special day to celebrate the birth of someone remarkable.

I'm sure there is the possibility of my readers shrugging off this testimony shared over who this man is, as I am being courted by him. But let me assure you that it is not my biased opinion that speaks his praises- they are spoken in sincerity from a sister in Christ whose admiration for Andrew runs so very deep. I'm afraid that even if I possessed the greatest eloquence of speech- I would not do justice in describing the man he is. His life is a reflection of Jesus Christ!

Here are several reasons that I thank the Lord for and think the world of Andrew...

He is humble. This is evident to see in his pursuit for instruction and desire to heed it.

He is respectful; to everyone, but especially his parents.

He is truthful. I was amazed at his transparency in our conversations the first night of our courtship out by the fire.

He is diligent. The tomato field has been a witness of his diligence and faithfulness. Even when there was no hope of breaking even- he was faithfully out in his field picking and doing the next thing.

He is a leader. Whether by example of active instruction, he does not neglect the duty of leading.

He demonstrates charity. His entire family is amazingly charitable! I've learned so much in these weeks I've gotten to know them a little better. Their home is full of joy and love- which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

He is a soldier of Christ. His heart is first and foremost passionate about Jesus Christ. His dedication to having a quiet time each morning and actively seeking the Lord are evidences that His heart is focused on knowing the Lord better.

He is a servant; always looking for ways to serve someone around him. I can't seem to be able to keep up with him- by the time I think of serving his drink, he's already gotten mine. An unjust example, but reoccurring theme all the same!

He is gracious/forgiving. I don't have time to go into detail about this; but it will be, yet another, future post. Just trust that I've never known anyone to exemplify Christ to me as effectively as Andrew has

I am so thankful for you! I'm not only thankful for my friend and companion- but for the servant and example you are to the world of who Christ is and what He has done.

I am learning more about my Savior each time I'm with you, and for that I am eternally grateful!

Oh where, oh where has Stephanie been...

The short answer is "on cloud nine!"

As befits my usual "routine" of blogging- I am behind on posting. But this time includes more negligence than other posts, because this time I've neglected to share with my readers the most exciting news I've experienced since the Lord's work of salvation in my life many years ago.

In the last two and a half months since my last post, the Lord's plans for my life have unfolded in a miraculous and unexpected way. As I write I am amazed at His gracious hand of mercy and fulfillment of so many promises. His mercy endureth forever!

I will now momentarily come back down to earth to share with you my wonderful news...

My dear readers, I want to introduce to you the most incredible man, Andrew Darbyshire!

We have officially been courting since September 4th, and it has been the most amazing and peace filled experience thus far. I cannot praise my Lord enough for His grace. I am both humbled and thrilled to have been chosen and pursued by Andrew. Wow!

Not alone...

On the same weekend that Andrew and I started courting, one of my dear friends from church began courting another young man in our church.

Meet Clay

Clay and Hannah's courtship officially started on September 14th. Praise God for His mercy! It has been absolutely amazing going through this process with two of my dearest friends! It's been awesome having Hannah to sympathize with the lack of memory and inability to focus. Our poor family is getting a double dose of twitterpation. They've been amazing!

Apparently there's something goin' around our church...and I'm so glad I caught it!

There is so much to share, as it's been a full month of memories and growing friendships, so I will do my best to get you all up-to-date! I'm working on a more detailed post of all the ways the Lord worked and the process leading up to our courtship. That post will come, hopefully soon; but I was anxious to get the news out. For those who love the detailed scoop- it is yet to come.

Berry Picking

Monday morning, we all (excepting dad) paraded out to gather blueberries at a local farm. It was relaxing to be hidden amongst rows and rows of shaded berries- providing quiet to pray and enjoy our Creator's beautiful handiwork!

We ended up with around fifty pounds of berries and we've been spending time this week freezing, canning, and drying (and, of course, consuming them!).

So nice to have these tall guys who can get the yummiest berries!

The fruit of our labor

I am daily experiencing the Lord's wisdom in His design for the family and its function in sanctifying individuals. Hannah and I were talking today about how much sanctification we feel the Lord working in our lives through the struggles and blessings of being a sister. As a result of being fallen sinful humans, learning to love each other can be a moment by moment battle against the flesh. My younger siblings are a wonderful confrontation of my pride and selfishness; one which I'm not always appreciative of until after the fact.

We are also learning the vital importance and power of prayer! Being a sister can many times leave you in a, seemingly, frustrated and powerless position. It is in these moments that we are required to walk in obedience and faith; graciously loving and patiently praying with fervency.

Praise the Lord for His goodness and wisdom towards us! I am humbled to reflect on the grace He has shown me- and I am bewildered by the love He continually shows.

His mercy endureth forever!

Several weeks ago, our family went to the lake for a few days to rejuvenate and savor the warm weather. One of those days the Darbyshires graciously blessed us with their presence. We had so much fun with their dear family and were thankful that they went along with our last minute plans, (hmmm...that phrase seems to come up a lot with us Johnsons).

Wow! It has been a full and busy two weeks. We had a wonderful time in San Antonio and learned so much; we're just praying that we'll apply the truths we learned in every day life and use our new found knowledge to glorify our wonderful King.

There are several posts I've halfway put together, but haven't had the chance to sit down and finish. Perhaps life will slow at some point, and blogging the endless supply of pictures will find a place on my schedule. Until that day, an account of yesterday's blessed activities will have to suffice...

Yesterday we Johnson ladies had the privilege of a lunch date with our dear Papa. He took us to the world famous Golden Arches- and treated us to hamburgers and ice cream.

We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, and papa patiently answered our array of questions about facts from his past. We love opportunities to learn about our heritage- what it was like during our grandparents childhood; the almost forgotten details behind how and when they met; the story of our great grandfather supposedly putting a skunk in the school furnace (lovely truths that explain some family quirks! :) ), and many other mesmerizing stories.

We had a blessed time together, and concluded our time by doing a little shopping and driving around town.

Grandparents are such a blessing and I'm thankful that we have been especially blessed!

Happy Birthday, Mother Dearest!

Today marks the birth of a wonderful and dear person to me- My beautiful Mother!

It is hard to know how to describe her to those of you who have never been in her joyous presence- she sparkles! But that word doesn't do justice to the depth that she has countless times proven to hold. Her hands are always busy in a project of some sort- be it gardening, reading, cleaning, sewing, or nurturing. Nurturing: now that is a word which fully describes my dear mother. I cannot count the number of times each of us has had the smallest bruise or most trivial concern; but we would never have known it to be so small- for she would compassionately place a band-aid (sealed with a kiss) over the microscopic sore, or gently take us in her arms and understandingly counsel us.

As much as I could go on about the many qualities my mother holds- none compares to the love she has for her Savior. My mother is not without fault, as she continually reminds us, for she is human. But she is a woman seeking diligently to know and love her Jesus more than the day before. She is covered in the righteousness of Christ, and the fruits are being produced abundantly in and through her life. Praise the Lord for His goodness!

Mother Dearest, I love you so very much and am thankful for the Lord's sovereign grace in placing you as an authority to lead me to Himself! Thank you for your daily example of a willing heart- and thank you ever so much for your labor to have my heart. It is yours and daddy's completely, and for that I praise God!

I'm so sorry we're not there to enjoy this day with you! But know that we're thinking of you today and praising God for you!

A quick note while packing...

This summer has proven to be an extremely busy and blessed one thus far- my lack of posting is full evidence of that :)
This weekend was our NCFIC Road Trip Conference, which turned out to be a wonderful encouragement and I'm so thankful the Lord allowed us to attend. We made many new and dear friends and were able to spend time in beautiful fellowship.
There were many exhorting messages throughout the day- but I must say that the ones which pierced my heart the deepest were the Brown and Bradrick ladies during the Ladies Tea. I pray I will remember the truths they brought out from the Word of God and diligently apply them.
I will have to post the pictures of the event later- as we are currently tying up loose ends before leaving, Lord willing, for San Antonio tomorrow morning. We are so excited to be attending the Baby Conference! Sadly our dear family wasn't able to come, but they lovingly sent Hannah and I along with Christie and Isaac under the title of Mommy's Helpers. While we are thrilled about the wisdom we will be able to glean while supervising Nina and Wosie, we will certainly miss our dear family back home!
I should now get back to being productive- although the sweet little one (aka Anna Bell) asleep in my arms is feeling rather comfortable and happy! That is my excuse for all the mistypes- I do best typing with two hands :)

May the Lord be praised for His goodness- and I hope each of you experience His goodness through His Word and creation today!

This weekend was full of excitement and busyness. Friday morning brought 101 little additions to our homestead...

Things are going well in our organic, 2 acre garden. We've been busy battling weeds, potato bugs (it's actually rather addicting searching for the little boogers and victoriously counting your "profits"). We're so excited about the fruit of our labor coming in and are thankful for the Lord's goodness in blessing us!

Thank you so much, Mr. Craig, for the tomato seedlings! They're doing great!

Now for the part of gardening that provides time for conversations...plenty of time! :)Friday night we canned 28 quarts of beans from our first picking...

We had Christie and Isaac (and their dear little ones) with us this weekend. It was busy and we made many memories together- memories which I'll have to share later in one of my famous catch up posts. :)

After our usual weekly journey to church and back (which took a little longer this afternoon- as the result of an unfinished car game...:) ), we had some time this evening to relax and enjoy our daddy-dearest (i.e. singing together, watching a movie, and discussing how we can improve our "car game" strategy).

But on a more serious note, I can't even begin to record the blessings and peace involved in being called the daughter of Philip Johnson! The Lord is so good and I'm thankful for His mercy towards the undeserving! Thank you, daddy-dearest, for the sacrificial life you've lead to serve your family. You are truly a hero!

The Lord Jesus Christ assures us that in the Scripture is eternal life. That is, it is the means through which God communicates eternal life. How can men believe in someone of whom they have not heard? They must know the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Scripture is essential to that faith in him by which they may live. Also the transformation of their personalities to be like the Lord Jesus can only be accomplished by a constant and conscious exposure to the Bible. 'Desire the sincere milk of the Word that ye may grow thereby', says Peter [1 Peter 2.2]. Eternal life, whether in the knowledge of Christ, conformity to Him, or growth in love, is not going to come without the searching of the Scriptures. We are all dying men and women in a dying world and there is one book alone in which eternal life is revealed. Let me know that book! "

Memorial Day Picnic

Last Monday was a blessed and encouraging day spent at the precious Brown family's home. Christie and Isaac were courageous in making the four hour drive- and were gracious to let Hannah and I tag along! We drove down Sunday morning and sat in on the NCFIC Road Trip kickoff. It was wonderful to hear the speakers and get a taste of our upcoming conference in Atlanta.

Monday was a beautiful day of fellowship, food, music, and wonderful speakers. It was sobering to reflect on the lives lost for our freedom. We have so much to be thankful for! And it certainly hasn't come without a cost.

Between dinner and dessert, we took the kiddos to a park to burn some energy. We ladies enjoyed each others company while Isaac played a combination of volleyball, baseball, and soccer with the girls and William. Quite entertaining!

To conclude a wonderful day, we went for ice cream with Phillip and Katie Bradrick. Hannah and I enjoyed listening to Christie and Katie discuss babies and motherhood preparations. So exciting!

This week was a blessed and full week for us Johnson's! Before the start of the week we celebrated my dear sister, Heather's, birthday. We worked on some sewing projects together, enjoyed some delicious cake (yes, A slight splurge!) and, as is typically the tradition, the celebration concluded with singing around an amazing bonfire by our guys.

Thank you so much, Heather dearest, for your example of charity and meekness! I've been so encouraged by your wonderful example and am thrilled to witness the fruit produced by our loving Saviour. Love you!

Nana and Mercy

Monday is "grocery day" in our household, so we ladies headed out the door early morning to start the business. To our joy, we met up with Christie and her little ones to spend the day in... chaotic fellowship and fun! :)

Because of our commitment to complete the Maker's Diet 40 Day Health Experience, meals have become a little more of an ordeal than they used to be! Tuesdays we spend most of the morning chopping veggies for chicken and beef soups. I had to stop this week to take a picture of all the pots. I think we're all ready for summer- no more soup!

The diet is going well thus far; we're officially half way through- and everyone is hanging in there. Hannah and I are learning some valuable lessons of joyfulness despite circumstances, (or despite how exhausted and grumpy you may feel in the morning!). Because most of the foods we can eat require time and preparation- our coffee intake has increased a little! But I have to say that it sure does make it worth the effort to watch your family eat well and their health improve.

It was such a delight to have Christie, Nina, Rosie, Willie, and baby Anna with us for a few days. Each day they were with us seemed full and blessed; in spite of the surprises along the way- like pink eye. Poor William didn't feel well and looked pitiful!

We worked in the garden most mornings and some afternoons. Christie and the girls were so sweet to help out!

The guys built this chicken pen last weekend, as a preparation for, yet another, exciting Johnson endeavor! They're hoping to begin raising meat chickens. We girls helped out by testing it Sunday night. Essie creatively convinced Nana and I to sleep outside under the stars, (don't worry- the chickens weren't in there with us!).

One afternoon during nap time, we girls went for a walk in our front "field" to spend some sister time gathering flowers. It was so beautiful outside, we couldn't resist the opportunity to take pictures!

I am so thankful for the Lord's blessing of such dear and wonderful sisters!

Wednesday night our guys were so precious and let us girls have a night out. Of course it consisted of coffee and pictures...

While we were downtown, we ran into some dear and old friends of ours: The Lebo ladies. It was such a blessing to fellowship with each of them after so many years!

Anna didn't seem to mind that we spent quite some time "catching up"!

For traditions sake! I'm not sure how the tradition started- but we can't seem to be able to walk past a statue without posing. My sisters are so sweet to play along with my crazy ideas!

We thank and praise our Lord for His guidance and mercy in our lives! His mercy endureth forever!

A few weekends ago, while our guys were at their father-son retreat, we girls packed a lunch and headed out to our beautiful field for a picnic. We had five of the precious nieces and nephews; which made it all the more exciting! We had a delightful time of yummy sandwiches and hand spun ice cream! We did have to call an and to the fun when the poor kiddos began to fall apart...nap time was in order! :)

We've been staying extremely busy the past few weeks with the garden, and we're so excited to see it coming together beautifully! I can't wait to post pictures- we're so proud! One of the newest endeavors we've taken on is doing the Maker's Diet 40 day experience as a family. When daddy suggested we all do it together, we jumped at the opportunity- excited to see every ones health improve. It's been two weeks now and we're heading into phase two. Who would have ever thought we'd all be rejoicing over increasing our daily portions of almond butter/honey cookies?!

We're so looking forward to this next week; one of the highlights being a visit from Christie and her little ones. Although we don't like for Christie and Isaac to have to be separated- we do enjoy visiting with our dear Christie while he's out of town!

Blessed Affliction

Since my post in February about my journey towards physical and spiritual health, the Lord has taught me many lessons and has been so faithful! His hesed faithfulness and steadfast love has continually surrounded me- even during the sleepless nights of itching and weeks of seclusion when it was tempting to ask if His love for me had altered. In those moments it was so important to focus on the testimonies of His faithfulness documented in His Word.

I can honestly say that I wouldn't change a moment of the last three months! I am in awe of this amazing God, who sovereignly brings clouds and sunshine to conform His children into His image- so that we may better reflect His glory.

"You have dealt well with your servant, O LORD, according to your word...It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces...I know, O LORD, that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me. Let your steadfast love comfort me according to your promise to your servant."

Psalm 119:65, 71-72, 75-76

As a twenty-three year old single young lady, the Lord knew exactly what affliction to bring in order that my focus may be directed towards Himself- that I would understand what it truly means to find my satisfaction and happiness in Him alone. He has taught me the importance of seeking an imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. It's easy as young ladies to become confident in who we are physically, and in how people perceive us. I cannot thank the Lord enough for the starring people- which drew my attention to the hidden sins of my pride and vanity. When my physical comfort and youthful grace were gone, I stood bare- realizing the lack of inward beauty and fruit. You don't realize how much emphasis you place on physical appearance until it's gone. And it's in those times that the inward heart is revealed- be it beautiful or selfish. I'm so thankful for my Lord's grace in showing me the selfishness and vanity of my heart!

I cannot even begin to praise my dear mother for her compassionate heart and kindness towards me during the past months! She truly has a tender heart and is such a wonderful care-taker! Thank you, mother dear, for your precious kindness in serving me! I love you so much!

The Lord has graciously shown me that He is the sole reason for my every breath! I have grown to love my Jesus as the Bridegroom whom I am actively waiting for. With every day that I wait for my love to return, I have the opportunity to serve and share the good news about His saving grace. Who can understand this love that gives His only Son to make a wretch His treasure, and makes an end of all my sin?

I am so thankful for the Lord's healing in my life! He has completely healed me, and I'm thankful that I can wake each morning and carry out my daily tasks as a service to Him. I am thankful for my blessed family and the Lord's obvious work in sanctifying us individually and as a whole. The list of wondrous works the Lord has done continues forever, and for those works we praise Him!

May He continue to bless us through rain and shine!

We spent last weekend with our new and dear friends, the Morton's. We can't thank you all enough for opening your home to us and blessing us with your encouraging fellowship! This verse has been continually going through my mind this weekend. With the celebration of my twenty-third birthday, my family and friends have worked together to surround me with blessings and encouragement! I am so thankful to the Lord for His grace and mercy...despite how undeserving we are.

Friday morning I woke to some yummy muffins and a cup of coffee which my dear sister, Hannah, kindly made for me. Then my precious mom took me out for a delicious Schlotzsky's sandwich (being on a special diet for the past few weeks made it even yummier!), and some time of fellowship and shopping. We had some wonderful conversations and I'm so thankful the Lord has blessed me with such a wise and amazing mother!

We returned home to find that the kids (considering the fact that my younger siblings are becoming young men and ladies...I need to think of another way of referring to them. But until I can think of that word....) had cleaned and decorated the house!

My heart has been so overjoyed and blessed by all of your sweet emails, cards, blog posts, calls, and visits! I feel undeserving of your friendships and love; but am so thankful to have each of you in my life!

Hey Everybody!

I (Hannah, Stephanie's annoying younger sister ;) am writing because today is a very special day! Today is Stephanie's 23 birthday!! And since I knew Stephanie wouldn't post anything, I had to! Hahaha! =)

On a more serious note...Stephanie, I am so thankful that the Lord has placed you in my life! God has taught me (and still teaching me) so much from watching your example. From being a joyful sister, respectful daughter, patient aunt, confiding friend (I'm thinking of all those late-nighters of staying up talking and laughing! I'm glad our siblings have learned to be patient with us! ;), contented spirit, love for the Lord, the list goes on and on. I'm so glad to have a godly example of what a daughter and sister should be like. Thank you!! I pray this year will be full of blessings, love, and laughter! =) I love you!

A Step Towards Physical and Spiritual Health

These past two months have been full of many lessons and grace from my Savior!

The tool He's been using to teach me so much is eczema. I've never had eczema to the severity that I've had it this winter. As a child, I would occasionally get a rash in the folds of my arms; but it was rare and, many times, unnoticeable. This time it couldn't go unnoticed, as the main break-out has been on my face.
At the beginning signs in January, we tried every possible home remedy and recommendation others had about healing eczema, but to no avail. Since the beginning of January, I have experienced three "flare-ups"; all of them taking the same cycle of inflammation, weeping, drying (resulting in a very attractive scab), and slow healing from there.

The severity of the itching has sometimes required a great amount of self-control; made possible only through the Holy Spirit! Because of the discomfort and disruption of every day life, I was determined to find out what was causing this sudden problem and would try anything to clear it up.
The answers didn't come all at once, but have come through bits and pieces along the way. My Naturopathic doctor told me in September that I have Leaky Gut Syndrome (a condition of altered or damaged intestinal lining, caused by antibiotics, toxins, poor diet, parasites or infection. It can lead to increased permeability of the gut wall to toxins, microbes, undigested food, waste or larger than normal macromolecules. It has been proposed that these substances affect the body directly, while others postulate an immune reaction to these substances). At the time, she thought it most important to focus on my hypoglycemia/adrenal fatigue, because my bodies response to insulin concerned her. My diet was then focused on keeping my blood sugars leveled by avoiding foods my body didn't like, and eating only foods that tested well for me. Even though my blood sugar levels were regulated, I look back now and realize how unbalanced my diet was. I ate very few fruits and vegetables, and drank a tremendous amount of coffee.

At the beginning of January, the first flare up appeared on my face. We watched it for a week and concluded that it must be shingles. With my face covered in a humbling weeping rash, we went for a visit with our family Practitioner and he informed us that it was atopic dermatitis; brought on by allergies, skin sensitivity and a weakened immune system. He then prayed with me and prescribed a steroid, antibiotic, and a (might I add wonderful) drug to relieve the itching. After five days the rash was completely cleared up and I was thrilled about being able to get back to a normal routine and sleep through the night! About a week later though (while still on the steroid and antibiotic) the rash reappeared, and with each day intensified.
We were in pursuit to find out what allergen was causing the reaction- environment was our first target. Through trial and error we found that it was the wood stove causing the irritation. My family was so kind and suffered through the cold weeks without it. Even though we had found the irritant and removed it, we were confused and wanted to know why I had suddenly, at the age of 22, formed an allergy to something that's always been around.

It was about this time in our confusion that my sister, Christie, came for a visit. She was very sympathetic in seeing me and immediately began putting her researching skills to good use. After about two hours of research, we were given some answers to the many prayers we had entreated over the past weeks! All the symptoms went back to the diagnosis of Leaky Gut. The eczema, adrenal fatigue, sudden allergies to food and environment, and a list of other problems I'd been trying to cure. The diet and medications I'd taken were only treating the symptoms, and not targeting the cause. Of course it all makes perfect sense when all the cards are laid before you.

With this new found knowledge, I began a diet focused on healing the intestinal lining (this diet was created through information gleaned from the books Nourishing Traditions and The Maker's Diet; and websites like The Nourishing Gourmet and Passionate Homemaking). My diet mainly consists of:
plenty of vegetables; grass fed, hormone-free meat; brown rice and soaked beans; coconut and flax seed oil (which I put in my rice and shakes); fruits and soaked nuts; green juice and spinach shake; kombucha and coconut milk kefir; plenty of water; lemon water, apple cider vinegar, burdock root tea; and supplements like L Glutamine, Evening Primrose Oil, MSM, salmana, and digestive enzymes. Because the digestive system is irritated, it's best to follow the rules of food combining. It's also important to exercise daily and get a little sunshine when you can.

That pretty much sums up my exciting diet!.. another way the Lord is teaching me self-control. He always knows how to best get to the root of our idols: food and comfort being some of mine!

It's been quite an adjustment, but after only a week of eating well my face had improved drastically, and I was back to sleeping through the night. Although I was so excited about this improvement, my face was still dry and in need of some kind of moisturizer (with so many allergies, it's hard to find a lotion that doesn't irritate). Tuesday night I did some researching and found that Aloe Vera is really good for the skin. We have an aloe plant in our kitchen, so I thought it would be worth a try. I cringe now at the remembrance of how impulsively I put the aloe on my cheeks. My skin instantly started to burn and I quickly washed it off- but if was too late. Within five minutes my face was swollen and I couldn't open my eyes. Mom and Hannah graciously helped me to bed and encouraged me that it was going to be alright. When I woke up the next morning I looked in the mirror in despair...the cycle was on, yet again; and all because of a careless experiment. I didn't know it was possible to be allergic to aloe; but I'm going to be much more careful in the future.

It's been a little over two weeks now and, despite this new reaction, I'm feeling much better and am encouraged to continue eating well and see what happens with each new day.

Little Josiah has been my helper with juicing. Every night, when I turn the juicer on, he'll run into the kitchen with his precious smile anxious to help me

I am so thankful to the Lord for His direction; but most importantly His steadfast love and peace which passes all understanding- without which these two months would have been extremely discouraging! Even though it has been a long journey, I trust and know that He means it only for good. He does not willingly afflict the children of men (Lamentations 3:33), but allows suffering as an invitation to get to know Him better. I am so thankful that He loves me so much, and desires my fellowship enough, to place something so drastic in my life to draw my attention to Himself.

I have received so much encouragement and have been blessed by my wonderful family and friends! The Lord has used the prayers and encouragement to exhort me to constantly find my joy and satisfaction in Christ and to continually praise and trust Him when unexpected suffering comes our way.

A Birthday Celebration!

Last night was our usual Tuesday night dinner with my grandparents; one of our favorite evenings of the week, for that reason. But yesterday was a little more special than usual- our dear Papa celebrated his 80th birthday!

Why I've Chosen to Have a Heart for Home

I've been receiving a lot of questions lately as to why I am a "stay at home daughter", and what all that entails. I've done my best to explain the reasons behind my decisions, and I've tried to answer a few questions that you may have.

Through the years, Marxism, feminism, evolutionism and individualism have all played an important role in dividing the family and forming broken homes. We know from scripture that the devil manipulates through the weaker vessel (Genesis 3:1-6, 1 Peter 3:7). We also know the importance God places on the structure of the family and His function and use for it. So what better plan for destroying the church than to destroy the family, the foundation of the church? As a church, we've convinced ourselves that we're not involved in any of these terrible things: but we've become deceptively entrenched in them; living out their effects in our day to day lives.

Karl Marx was fueled by a strong hatred for God and anything His word taught. "Perhaps his most ingenious and successful move in tearing down Christendom was to inspire women to tear down their homes and families with their own hands" (So Much More, by Anna Sofia and Elizabeth Botkin). Part of his design was to create state run schools, so that mothers would then join the work force and effectively be taken out of the sphere of home. The result created confusion and diversion from the biblical structure of marriage and the family. Adolf Hitler also understood how to go about achieving his goal (to implement a new world order). He understood that the direction of the nation would be determined by the ideology of the younger generation. In other words, he understood that the way to accomplish this goal was in manipulating the minds of the youth.

So why am I delving into all of this history? Because something that the Lord designed and values is being forgotten, even despised, by Christendom. It is not my place to go out and change the world; but I can make a difference by living out the biblical structure in my own life. I cannot fix damage done by Karl Marx, Margaret Sanger, Charles Darwin, and many others; but I can fight against their attacks on Christ by uncovering the lies they taught and living contrary to their teaching. In doing so, I am playing a part in changing the direction our culture is going. The best way to do that..by living out the teachings of the Bible.

Those teachings are:

Proverbs 31:10-30. What better place to learn to be a Proverbs 31 woman than in my home and under the teaching of my mother?

Titus 2:3-5. "...and so train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled".
That is a scary thought: to revile (abuse) the word of God. I don't think that any woman could prepare long enough to perfectly execute this list. But it is my duty to aim to follow this standard that God has set. What better way to prepare to love my husband and children than to practice Colossians 3 inside my home, with those I'm most comfortable with and find it most hard to deny myself to! And what better way to practice being a keeper at home than to learn the ins and outs from my mother, who has wells of wisdom on the subject! And who could think of a better way to prepare to submit to a husband, whether he's right or wrong, than to practice in a daughters relationship to her father?

Psalms 147:12 "May our sons in their youth be like plants full grown, our daughters like corner pillars cut for the structure of a palace."

Here are some answers to questions/concerns people have had about me being at home:

1) Is your dad becoming a hyper-patriarchal father?
My dad is as far from that title as is humanly possible! My father has been given responsibility before God to protect me and lead me in the word (Numbers 30:2-5, Ephesians 5:23-27, Ephesians 6:4). Because he steps up to this job does not make him a tyrant. The role I practice with my father preceeds the role I will take in marriage, while also teaching me to respect and obey Christ.

2) Aren't you lazy/negligent for not providing for yourself?
Never in scripture are women given the responsibility to provide for their families. This is a job given specifically to men; to the extent that if they fail in this responsibility, they are worse than unbelievers (1 Timothy 5:8).

3) But aren't you losing your identity by staying at home under the obedience of your parents? Aren't you allowed to make this decision for yourself?
This decision has been completely mine. My parents are very gracious and have encouraged and guided me, but never through guilt or force! And as to the other question, I can think of no better way to answer than through the Word. Luke 9:23-24, Philippians 2:5-7, and Ephesians 6:1:"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right." We all know this verse and probably assume it applies only to young children. But I am still my parents child; no matter my age. It is my duty to honor and obey them. Now when I'm married, Lord willing, the authority role will be transferred from my parents to my husband. I will honor and obey my husband, while still respecting my parents. But their role will be different in the event of my marriage.

4) But you're almost twenty-three! Shouldn't you form some sort of independence?
This belief is strictly from the world and not a biblical idea at all! The structure laid out in the Bible is that a woman is under her father's protection and serves/learns inside her home, discipled by her parents, until she is married. That role of protection is then passed to the husband. There is never a time that women are supposed to be without a headship to protect and lead them. So the idea that a girl should go out into the world and gain independence once she's 18 is simply a pagan idea.

5) So basically you've decided to sit at home and not further your education?
There could be nothing further from the truth! I have the opportunity to study any subject I feel lacking in, for as long as is required. Just because I'm not taught by "certified" teachers, doesn't mean I'm not learning. "We are addicted to schooling, and ignorant of education" (Voddie Baucham).

6) Isn't it old-fashioned? After all, this is the Twenty-first century.
Yes, this is the twenty-first century. But God's word still stands as the outline we should live our lives by. Culture should not influence our obedience to God. If God's word is considered old-fashioned, then consider me a puritan dinosaur!

7) How can God use you to increase His kingdom if you're hiding within the realms of your home?
This objection is raised from the belief that God's kingdom is increased only through tracts, witnessing to unbelievers, or being involved in some kind of church ministry.
I have the opportunity to disciple my five younger siblings every day. I have been given the opportunity to help teach them God's word and pray for them daily that they would grow in the knowledge of our Lord. It may not seem like much of a Kingdom building time; but imagine when my younger siblings have their own families and, Lord willing, raise up a godly seed. Imagine the influence my time with them now could have on the generations to come. Praise God that I've been given such a great responsibility! I only pray they will learn to love and fear the Lord through my example: be it bad or good. In being a stay at home daughter I have also been given the opportunity with my family to practice hospitality, which is one of the best ways to advance the Kingdom of God! Which brings me to the next question:

8) Doesn't your view of the family hinder you from being involved in any kind of ministry/ mission work?
This objection also comes from a misunderstanding of what ministry truly us. I can't count the number of times my family has opened its doors and ministered to believers, unbelievers, individuals, families, just around the dinner table. If we produce strong families and show hospitality as we're commanded, imagine the doors of ministry that could be opened! My view of the family provides opportunities to minister. Another reason this question comes up is because we as Christians don't value the role of motherhood and homemaking. We consider it to be more effective to be individual missionaries instead of keeping a home and raising up warriors for Christ. I have seen first hand a lot of missionaries sacrificing their families for the sake of the ministry.

9) How will you experience Christ if you don't go to school to learn about Him?
And this question comes from the mentality that in order to fully experience Christ and learn about God, you must study under a theological professor. A man doesn't have to go to seminary to understand God and His word. My father is a perfect example of this. He has never spent a day studying under a theological professor, and yet he is one of the wisest men I know! I have my own teacher of the Word inside these four walls: My father! And as far as experiencing Christ, it goes much deeper than a mere feeling of the Holy Spirit's presence. It is the day to day trials and suffering molding us into His image and sanctifying us daily in His word.

Now I realize that what I have said is extremely controversial and radical.
I realize that it is not my place to say what any other individual or family should do, nor is it my place to judge others for taking a different path than myself. But I must personally live according to my conscience and the conclusions I've come to.
"So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin" (James 4:17).

I hope this has answered questions and given everyone a better understanding of why I've chosen to have a heart for home. If any of you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. I'll try my best to answer them!

Ahh!...The third post I've done in the course of one week. This is quite the record for me!

I'm staying the week with my sister, Christie, to help her while she recovers. Although she's doing wonderfully and probably doesn't really need my help now, we like to take advantage of every opportunity. The Arrival of a Little Blessing

We are so excited and blessed that Anna Verity Weathers arrived safely today. She weighs a whole 7lbs 3oz, and she's 20 inches long. The birth went very well, and Christie is doing wonderfully.

A Radiant Legacy

Yesterday marked the birthday of someone very special to my family, my grandmother, Jeananne Johnson. The word that always comes to mind when I think of her is radiant (beaming with brightness; emitting a vivid light or splendor; as the radiant sun)!

She joyfully reflects the love of Christ and I experience His love through her sweet fellowship. One of my favorite places to be is in her living room, with a cup of her delicious coffee in one hand and an old photo album of her and my grandfather in the other. I'll flip through its pages while she recounts intriguing stories from the past.

My grandparents would always strive, and definitely succeeded, in making our moments with them memorable and blessed. My sisters and I have such sweet memories of being young and waking to the sound of Mema's humming in the kitchen and the aroma of coffee and pancakes.

As easy as it may be for me to think she was, I know my mema wasn't just born a radiant person. She allowed the Lord to use the hardships throughout her life to mold her into the precious person we know and love.

The stories we've heard her tell time and again are the wonderful memories of her four boys growing up; the blessed marriage she shared with her sweetheart, Roger Johnson; and the extraordinary experiences of serving in the Philippines. Even though there are many hardships to share from her past, she always focuses on the blessings; sharing the more somber stories only when asked, and the stories are never told with resentment.

When I recount the trials and losses she has experienced over the course of her life (losing her father at a young age, experiencing the death of two sons and her husband), I stand in amazement at the sweet and gentle person she is today. It is a lesson I hope to remember throughout my life...to trust in my Savior and allow the affliction He brings to direct me to Him and turn me into the person He created me to be.

I could not speak my grandmother's praise enough! I am so thankful for the example she has laid out for all of her family. It is my prayer, Lord willing, to carry on her legacy to my grandchildren.

Thank you, dearest Mema, for all you have done and are doing to impact those around you! You are truly amazing and I thank the Lord for you daily!

Black Forest Cheesecake...Easy!

This cheesecake is an extremely easy one to make! It's a Taste of Home recipe that doesn't require baking and doesn't have to be refrigerated over night. This is a great dessert for those dinners that you want something yummy and presentable, but don't have the energy to spend a lot of time on.

Ingredients

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese

1/3 cup sugar

1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 carton (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 chocolate crumb crust (8 inches)

1/4 cup baking cocoa

1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling

Directions

In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the sour cream and vanilla. Fold in whipped topping. Spread half of the mixture evenly into crust. Fold cocoa and confectioner's sugar into remaining whipped topping mixture; carefully spread over cream cheese layer. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

Cut into slices; top each slice with cherry pie filling. Refrigerate leftovers.

Yield: 6-8 servings.

My Alterations...

Because my family members aren't keen on cherries, we substitute strawberry pie filling for the cherry. I've also put miniature chocolate chips inside the chocolate layer; in our household you can't get too much chocolate.

Satisfied In Christ

Over the last month or so the Lord's been pressing on my heart three different lessons that I'm learning to apply. It has seemed as if every sermon, conversation, devotion, and prayer has drawn my attention back to these three important truths...

1) Continually seek the Lord and His presence (2 Chronicles 16:11),

2) Find your satisfaction in Christ alone (Psalm 17:15,"God is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in Him" -John Piper)

3) Strive to glorify God in your thoughts, motives, actions, and words (1 Corinthians 10:31).

The Lord has brought the above quote by John Piper to my mind many times over the last month. There's so much joy in grasping the wisdom in this truth. My fulfilment and satisfaction isn't found in friendships, physical perfection, marriage, successful endeavors, etc... but my soul is satisfied only when I am looking to Christ and drinking from the fountain of life!

I'd encourage you to listen to this sermon by Voddie Baucham: Gospel Healing for Hurting Marriages. Don't let the title fool you, it's applicable for everyone; whether you're married or not. I've listened to it four times now and still haven't completely grasped the deep truths he covers. It's wonderful!

Praise God for His mercy and love towards His children! May we find our satisfaction in Him and desire to glorify Him in all that we do.

Our Weekend at the Lake

For a few weeks my family had enthusiastically planned a weekend camping trip for June. We prepared everything for camping. We were all looking forward to evening campfires, roasting marshmallows, sleeping under the stars (well, if you could consider sleeping in a tent "under the stars"). Needless to say, we were excited. But in all the excitement we forgot one important detail: reserving a campsite. To make a long story short, we resorted to staying in my grandparent's lake house not far from the water. Even though there were a lot of setbacks, it turned out to be a weekend of memories and fun!

While dad and Matt were working to get the boat started, Hannah accidentally dropped my lens cap in the water. They worked hard to find it, but in the end dad retrieved it and was rewarded with French toast.

Finally on our way! We only had one more major setback... after driving out pretty far to a secluded waterfall, the boat decided it had had enough and wouldn't crank. The engine was stubborn just long enough to give us all a scare that we would be stranded in our little cove; praise the Lord it started back after a while!

Last Saturday, the Fondry girls, Looper girls, Hannah and myself organized a Mother-Daughter Tea, in honor of Mother's Day.
We girls had a lot of fun planning for the Tea, and we were happy with how things turned out (despite the rain)! It was a blessing to have the opportunity to demonstrate to our mother's how thankful we are for all that they have sacrificed for us over the years, and for instilling in each of us a love for our Savior.

Tending to the Heart

I've realized the past few days just how much I hate crab grass!!!
While it looks easy enough to get rid of on the surface, all it takes is one pull and you realize how deep it really goes. When you begin pulling and getting to the roots, it seems they're all connected and go so deep you'll never find the core to be completely rid of them!

After a while of pulling today (and being attacked by fire ants), I began to meditate on how much like my heart the garden is. The invasive weeds that overtake our garden are much like the roots of bitterness, anger, selfishness, pride, etc., that I am daily finding new roots which go deep into my heart. On the surface they may seem harmless, but when they are not guarded against or tended to, the roots grow quickly into the depths of our hearts.

The Bible uses the metaphor of fruit when talking about the results/actions that will come about by the Holy Spirit's dwelling in us. We should carefully attend our hearts and guard against thoughts or meditations that could in any way result in or nourish the weeds of sin which so quickly take root and flourish.

I pray that in time my heart will properly reflect Christ's beauty as this picture does. Realizing that any fruit produced can only be done through the Holy Spirit, it is to Jesus alone that we attribute any goodness or beauty.

Experiencing Unfeigned Joy

My personal journey of sanctification has been a long one, requiring a considerable amount of grace from my loving Savior. I could never share every lesson that I learn throughout the day; as I seem to find myself frequently chastened by my Savior's gentle hand while I carry out the daily tasks He's called me to.

The greatest lesson He's taught me over the past months has resulted in an abundant amount of joy and peace. The lesson has consisted of enjoying my parents and doing my very best to bless them with the means I am capable.

We can all agree that the Bible gives clear commands to "Honor thy father and mother", and it puts strong emphasis and attention on the consequences of not doing so. But what does it truly mean to honor my parents? Is obeying them all that's required?

This morning I did a quick word search in Strong's Concordance about the topic of parents and the honor that's due them. You can see how importance this is to God by the long list of passages addressed to this subject. The consequences of not honoring your parents is all through the Proverbs, and we can see how it negatively effected many men and women throughout the Bible.
A subject that holds such importance to God should be heeded, right?! Should these commands be acted upon by the standards of our culture today?...

Merriam-Webster's 2009 Dictionary defines honor in this way:

one whose worth brings respect or fame, an evidence or symbol of distinction: an exalted title or rank, a person of superior standing —now used especially as a title for a holder of high office .

That's our cultures idea of showing honor. Here's what Noah Webster said in his 1828 Dictionary:

1. To revere; to respect; to treat with deference and submission, and perform relative duties to.

Honor thy father and thy mother. Ex.20.

2. A testimony of esteem; any expression of respect or of high estimation by words or actions...(emphasis added)

Honoring our parents entails much more than just obeying them because we're commanded to. It involves loving them in sincerity, resulting in our desire to act upon our love and express it to them through our words and actions! To truly honor someone, we must do all in our power to respect and bless them.

"There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers." -Proverbs 30:11

I've been convicted of how I've neglected truly blessing my parents over the years. But by applying and acting upon these truths over the past months, the Lord has blessed me so abundantly! I definitely think He was gracious in giving me the parents He did. My mother's joyful spirit and love for her children and husband; my dad's wisdom, patience, and love for the Lord... make it a pleasure to honor them! They have become my closest and dearest friends. I long for their counsel and praise God for His using them to lead me.

I never thought it would be possible to get wireless where we live, but after a visit from the repair man yesterday we now have the highest upgrade (including wireless) for no extra cost; only because we were having inconveniences. One occasion I forgot to post about was my sister Hannah's 18th birthday.

In addition to our traditional celebration as a family, this year we did a little something special and had a girls night (to Hannah's surprise). With the help of a blindfold, she had no idea where we were going or that we would spend the evening with our dear friends: Sarah and Beth.

We enjoyed a dinner at Kanpai of Tokyo, followed by a walk downtown, and a delicious cake in the parking garage.
(I'm so thankful to Sarah for all the work she did to make Hannah's birthday memorable!)

I'm so proud of you, Hannah! You have blossomed into a lovely woman with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. I pray the Lord will continue to bless you with wisdom beyond your years!

After months of not posting, while staying busy with the blessings of life, I'm going to attempt to catch-up a little on some of the highlights from the past three months.

Orlando, Florida...

In February, Isaac and Christie took Matt and me with them on one of Isaac's business trips. Matt, Christie and I took the kids and palled around until the highlight of the week: SeaWorld!
We had such a wonderful time of shopping, fellowship and great food! Many wonderful memories were made and we're appreciative that Isaac included us in his plans.

The Lord is so good to us, and always has perfect timing!!!

After weeks of not blogging, I'm finally writing from Escondido, California, as I'm spending time with my dear friend, Leah. She's been here for five months now (due to her meeting, falling head-over-heels in love with, and marrying Chris :-))...so it's been amazing having full days together!

I flew in Friday night and woke up to a cup of coffee and a trip to DisneyLand; which was amazing! Who says you have to act your age?!

Yesterday afternoon we went downtown San Diego to SeaPort Village. After walking through the cute shops and sitting by the harbor we ended the evening with wonderful pizza from Sammy's Firestone Pizza.

Since I couldn't bring my camera on the trip, Leah's been kind enough to share her pics with me. So I can't take credit for the great shots!

I'm so blessed to be with Leah! I do, however, miss all of you guys at home! I've got some pictures of fancy things, Josiah... you can see those when I get back! And David, I've got a little souvenir for each of you guys! Sorry Misha, I didn't make it home in time to take down decorations...maybe next year! :)

Our Domesticated Boys!

After hearing jokes about our dinner last Friday night (granted, the pizza crust did turn out unusually large!), Hannah, mom and I decided to let the boys cook their own dinner Saturday night. The boys smiled and agreed to play along with our "wanting appreciation" game.

In the end we were impressed with the boys domestic skills. Their dinner turned out very well and it was fun to watch all the boys carry out their tasks with diligence. I have to say, though, that I was especially impressed with Matt's multi-tasking skills. He quietly juggled the tea and spaghetti sauce while all the chaos continued around him. Way to go, Matt!

A Lost Blessing

During a conversation we had with Misha a few weeks ago, he talked a little about his birth parents. He didn't know anything about them except that they were drug addicts and didn't want him. His remark about his birth mother was this: "When I born, my mom see me and she say: Oh Scary! Throw him away!"

As I listened and watched him in the hammock, I felt my heart sink to imagine the heartache he's faced throughout life. It's enough of a challenge to be born with disabilities, but to face rejection by the people who are most responsible for loving and guiding you throughout life...how heartbreaking!

After making these remarks about his birth family, Misha began to tell us how much he loved his new family. He named each one of us and said in a gentle voice, "i love you", after each name. It was at this moment I realized where the true loss really stands: the person blinded by Misha's outer-shell. The choice that was made after his birth was a decision to give away a remarkable blessing; simply because he didn't meet the world's standard of "normal".

Because someone "threw" away a blessing fifteen years ago, our family is abundantly blessed today!

Catching up...

After a week of not posting anything, it's time to do a little catching up!

Christie and Isaac came up for the weekend. Isaac had to go back for work Sunday evening, but Christie and the kids stayed with us until Wednesday afternoon. It's always such a blessing having them all here; this time was especially memorable!

I've tried to keep the pictures at a minimum... but keep in mind that it's my idea of mimimum!

Taking a walk with Misha. He's wanting to be outdoors more now: proof he's feeling better!

Misha's favorite thing to do right now is drive up and down the drive-way. Dad's so sweet to take care of the gears and everything, while Misha worries about staying out of the ditch!

Misha Gets Revenge

Misha's sense of humor has kept our family laughing since the day he arrived!
Yesterday, during one of the times he felt intense pain, he was holding his bear dressed in the surgeon clothes the hospital gave him. Between pains, Misha pointed at his bear and said, "Doctor, my operation!". He then proceeded to jokingly break the "doctor's" legs.

We got him to re-enact for the camera...

"My legs, you! Spanky, spanky!"

As you can see, he wasn't too happy at that moment with the doctor that performed his amputation! Misha, Misha!

Safely Home!

Praise the Lord for His hand of provision and safety!

After a tiring week of surgery for Misha, he arrived safely home to us on Friday night. The surgery turned out to be a more traumatic experience for him than we had expected; but the Lord's hand was upon Misha and he seems to be recovering wonderfully and relatively quickly.
His haven has become the living room couch, where he spends most of the day resting. When dad asked him if he would prefer to be in mom and dad's room, where it's quiet, Misha emphatically shook his head and said: "No children in your room. Boring!"

Even though there are many more mountains for Misha to climb, this particular mountain has been conquered and he is on his way to recovery!

Going to spend some time outdoors

We're so blessed to have Misha's sweet smile within our home again. Thank you all so much for your prayers and support! You've been a wonderful blessing, and we pray the Lord will bless you all in return!

Surgery has begun

Having just kissed and prayed over Misha, we are now sitting anxiously in the waiting room…the next few hours of his surgery will seem an eternity!
Why did evil win over good in the garden of Eden? That is a question I’ve found myself asking continually as we’ve been at the hospital preparing for Misha's surgery. Even though death has been conquered by our Lord, we must still face the consequences of living in a fallen world.
My dear brother, Misha, is now experiencing a heavy dose of the evil in this world. Because he was born with this disease, it is necessary to have a double amputation in order for him to have improved mobility.

When it was first decided that our family was to foster Misha during his surgery, I didn’t feel very sympathetic towards the operation that would take place. In my mind, it seemed so distant and in-personal; I didn’t fully comprehend all that would be involved. But since Misha’s arrival on September 24, I have grown to love him in a way I never anticipated. He is now truly my brother, and I cannot imagine life without him completing our family!
Because he has become my brother, I am experiencing an overwhelming fear, anxiety, and doubt; there is a sympathy and compassion you feel towards a family-member that is hurting, which allows you to taste a little of what they're experiencing.

Yesterday had an early start for dad, mom, Misha and me. After being admitted into the hospital, the day started with many visits with doctors and nurses. Misha and I were able to break away between visits and sneak in some PS2, (Spider-man won most of the time!).
The conclusion of visits came with the last visit to the prosthetics department. In the midst of the conversation, Misha caught my eye and began to make different facial expressions. Our attention spiraled downward as we exchanged expressions back and forth trying to make the other smile. Every time he flashed a smile at me, the room would light up!
This continued for a while until the prostheticist pulled out the samples of what Misha was trading his legs for. I could see a cloud pass over his face and the light faded. We left the room and I could feel a heaviness of understanding at everything he must be meditating on. It had been a full day of information about the pain, hardships, and procedures that would stand in his future, and it seemed as if the cost was greater than the rewards.
Once we walked out of the room, mom and I gathered around him to offer our support. In my butchered Russian I told Misha everything was going to be okay. He began to fight back tears, and after moments of fighting he hung his head in despair and began to weep. We gathered him in our arms and grieved with him; knowing that though the surgery is necessary, and will improve his life, it was needful for him to grieve over the loss of his legs. The amount of change the surgery will bring into his life must be daunting for him. After a few hours of sweet fellowship Misha’s spirits lifted. Though he was incredibly nervous going into surgery, he no longer seemed depressed about his situation.

Misha has no knowledge of a Sovereign God. If I were facing this surgery; I would have security about what would happen to me if all went wrong and I died, I would know that whatever the outcome it was God’s will and He would work everything to our good and for His glory.
Please pray that God will reveal Himself to Misha through this. Pray that He will comfort him with a peace that surpasses his understanding.

This is such a wonderful reminder to all of us how despairing life would be without the promise and comfort of our God!

What is ISO and How Does it Effect Your Pictures?

ISO/Film Speed determines how sensitive the image sensor (Memory card) is to the amount of light present.

Back before digital cameras became so popular, ISO indicated film speed and you could only change the ISO in film cameras by buying different ISO rated film itself. Today though, digital cameras can adjust themselves as if you had changed the type of film you are using. All you have to do is change the ISO setting on your camera.

Your camera's sensitivity may differ a little from my camera's, but here are some general ideas of when to use which ISO speed:

ISO 50 - 80 - for taking photos in bright light; excellent for close-ups, landscape, and portraits. Produces fine detail and image quality.

ISO 100 - for extra sensitivity with little, if any, reduced image quality.

ISO 200 - cloudy and overcast days. Acceptable image quality, with very little visible noise.

ISO 400 - suitable for indoor photography whether or not a flash is used. Useful for "stop-action" and sports photographs. The quality will not be as sharp as 200, but you shouldn't have too much noise visible.

ISO 800, 1600 and above - useful for taking photos in very low light, or outside in good light when increased shutter speeds are required. It is important to know that at these ISO speeds you will have a great deal of noise/grain (tiny specks that appear in the image and reduce the sharpness/quality). There are times that noise can add to the effect of the picture; just be sure you want noise in the image before you take it...there's no removing it after you shoot.

Now, with all that said, what is the point of ISO? Well there are many uses for it, but the most common one is lighting control. The higher you have your camera's ISO set to, the easier it is to take pictures in dark places.

Taken at ISO 1600. The noise is very noticable, and the picture is lacking in sharpness.

Taken at ISO 200. There is not much noticeable noise, and the quality is sharper.

Because these photos were taken outside in the sunshine, it wasn't necessary to use ISO 1600. But when you're in darker lighting situations, and not able to use flash, it will be necessary to use a faster ISO (i.e. 800+). This can be frustrating because your images will have a good deal of noise; sometimes so much as to not have a useable image.

There are many ways to experiment with your camera settings to create great shots; ISO is one way to do that. Just play around with the different numbers in dark and light situations and see what results you get.

So to sum it up:

-If you want crystal clear, sharp looking pictures, you need to use as low of an ISO setting as you can, (as a guide, it's best to use ISO 100 as much as possible).

-EXPERIMENT and have fun!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cheesecake

Unlike most cheesecake recipes, this one is pretty easy. It's lacking in difficulty, but not in flavor! I'm thankful that it's easy because it just so happens to be my dad's favorite.

Ingredients: Yield 16 servings

2 graham cracker crusts (you will end up with two cheesecakes)
3 packages (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup (8 oz) sour cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 package chocolate chip cookie dough (I use the store bought pre-made dough)
miniature semisweet chocolate chips, optional

Recipe:
In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add eggs; beat on low just until combined. Add sour cream and vanilla; beat just until blended. Pour over crust. Slice cookie dough; drop dough slices over filling, gently pushing dough below surface (dough should be completely covered by filling). Place cakes on a baking sheet.

Bake at 350 for 30-50 minutes* or until center is almost set**. Cool cakes completely on a wire rack. Sprinkle with chips. Refrigerate overnight.

*I know it's a broad time frame; but since oven temperatures vary so much, I would check the cheesecakes after 30 mins. They will probably have to cook a little longer, but it's good to check and be safe!

**To know if the cheesecake is set, look for the edges to be a little puffy; the center will still look relatively glossy, but it won't feel wet when you touch it. The object is to keep the cheesecake from "cracking". You'll know if it happens; and if it does, you know to not cook is so long next time!

Afternoon at the Lake

We spent Sunday evening at Craig and Rose's house. They were kind enough to open up their home and share a wonderful meal of hamburgers and hotdogs. The kids had such a good time swimming! Hannah, Matt and I were discouraged by the cold water, but it didn't stop the kids!

I love the admiration in Misha's face as he looks up at dad.

The life-jacket was a little too small, so our creative Matt came up with a way to keep Misha buoyant.
